Solar for Malaysian Factory: How Dexion Achieved LEED Gold with AQ Energy

In the competitive world of third-party logistics (3PL) and manufacturing, efficiency isn’t just about how you move goods—it’s about how you power the move. Recently, Dexion Asia Pacific, a global leader in storage solutions, set a new benchmark for the industry.

By partnering with AQ Energy, Dexion transformed its regional manufacturing hub in Malaysia into a sustainable powerhouse, proving that solar for industrial operations is a premier competitive advantage.

The Client & The Vision: Starting with a Green Canvas

Dexion’s story began in 1937 with an Australian-born engineer, Demetrius Comino, who invented the world’s first adjustable racking system. Today, Dexion is an international brand with a deep presence across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand.

When they broke ground on their new regional headquarters and manufacturing facility in Malaysia, they weren’t just building a factory; they wanted a site that would “stand the test of time.” This greenfield project gave Dexion a blank canvas to integrate sustainability into the very DNA of their manufacturing process.

The Motivation: A Twofold Driver for Change

Why did Dexion decide to go solar? According to Damian Cross, Managing Director of Dexion Asia Pacific, the decision was driven by two unavoidable factors:

  1. Economic Strategy: With energy tariffs evolving, controlling operational costs was vital. Solar provides a permanent hedge against rising electricity prices.
  2. Environmental Commitment: Dexion felt a genuine responsibility to do their part for the planet. By leveraging Malaysia’s abundant sunlight, they could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their manufacturing output.
  3.

“We were looking for an efficient energy system that allowed us to leverage the high levels of sunlight we get in the region,” says Damian Cross.

The Feature: What Makes a Dexion-Grade Solar Installation?

AQ Energy designed a bespoke system specifically tailored for Dexion’s industrial needs. Key features of the installation include:

  • Tier-1 High-Efficiency Panels: Maximizing power output per square meter of the expansive factory roof.
  • Industrial-Grade Mounting: Engineered to withstand local weather conditions while maintaining roof integrity.
  • Real-Time Performance Monitoring: A digital dashboard that allows Dexion to track energy generation and savings down to the minute.
  • Seamless Grid Integration: Fully compliant with all Malaysian grid requirements and safety standards.

The Selection Process: Why AQ Energy Stood Out

Dexion didn’t just pick the first name they found. They conducted a rigorous appraisal of multiple solar providers across Malaysia. AQ Energy was selected as the partner of choice because of:

  • Unmatched Responsiveness: Clear, fast communication to keep the large-scale construction on schedule.
  • Technical Professionalism: An expert approach to the initial consultation and technical design.
  • High-Quality Insights: Transparent, data-backed information that made the financial decision easy for their board.

Damian Cross’s verdict? He explicitly described AQ Energy as “best in class” compared to other suppliers in the market.

The Achievement: The LEED Gold Standard & GreenRE Excellence

The ultimate validation of this collaboration was the facility achieving LEED Gold Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). This is no small feat—it is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability excellence and one of the only facilities of its type in the region to reach this level. In addition to LEED, the project also aligns with GreenRE, Malaysia’s leading green building certification.

The Benefits of Solar forManufacturing Sites:

Operational Savings: Immediate reduction in monthly overheads.

Global Recognition: LEED Gold status boosts brand reputation and attracts ESG-conscious partners.

Future-Proofing: The facility is now protected against future energy price hikes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A. How much roof space do I need for a factory solar system?

Most industrial systems require at least 5,000 to 10,000 sq. ft. to be financially viable, though even smaller sites can benefit from the 2026 Solar ATAP policy.

B. Does a solar installation affect my factory’s fire insurance?

Not when done correctly. AQ Energy uses fire-rated components and adheres to strict safety standards that comply with Malaysian insurance requirements.

C. What is the typical solar ROI for a manufacturing hub?

With current government tax incentives and energy rates, most factories see a full return on investment within 3 to 5 years.

D. Can AQ Energy help with LEED or GreenRE certifications?

Yes! Solar energy is a major component of green building certifications. We provide the necessary data and technical documentation to support your LEED and GreenRE applications.

E. Is maintenance difficult for large industrial systems?

Not at all. Our systems are designed for durability, and we offer maintenance packages that include professional cleaning and health checks to ensure peak performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight hits the panels, it generates direct current (DC) electricity. This DC power is then sent to an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) – the type of electricity used by your home appliances. Once converted, the electricity can be used to power your home, and any excess energy can be stored in a battery (if installed) or exported back to the grid, depending on your system setup.

Is this solar installation legal?

Yes, all our solar installations are fully legal and comply with local regulations. We handle all necessary approvals, including applications to the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

For hybrid solar systems with battery storage, we also manage the required applications and ensure full compliance with guidelines set by TNB and the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga, ST).

How do you calculate your savings?

We calculate your savings based on current TNB tariff rates, based on the respective electricity bill that you have inserted to the estimator. The savings per month is averaged throughout the year, including monsoon (rainy) months and sunnier months. Our savings estimate is reinforced by the data that we collect from our previous customers through the system monitoring application.

What if I am working during the afternoon?

That’s perfectly fine! Even if you’re not home during the day, your solar system will still generate electricity. For a grid-tied system, the excess energy you don’t use can be exported back to the grid under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) program, earning you credits to offset your electricity bill.

If you have a hybrid solar system with battery storage, the excess energy generated during the day will be stored in the battery. This stored power can then be used later in the evening or during power outages (on the backup load), giving you more flexibility and reducing your reliance on the grid.

Do I need to clean my panels frequently?

Not necessarily. Solar panels are designed to be low-maintenance, and in most cases, rainwater helps keep them clean. We usually recommend cleaning them once every 2 to 3 years, depending on your area’s environment. If your panels are exposed to a lot of dust, bird droppings, or nearby construction, more frequent cleaning might help maintain performance.
